Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that is used to replace or restore bone in the jaw. Bone loss can occur due to a variety of reasons, including infection, trauma, or tooth loss – once a tooth is lost, the jawbone around the empty tooth socket begins to shrink and deteriorate due to a lack of stimulation. Over time, thinning facial bones can cause the facial appearance to change as bone structures around the lips shrink and skin begins to sag.

Bone grafting is a common treatment for patients who are experiencing bone loss, and it can be performed in a number of ways.

  • One option is to use donor bone from another part of the patient’s body; this is known as autogenous bone grafting.
  • Alternatively, donor bone can be obtained from a cadaver, or synthetic bone material can be used.

The goal of bone grafting is to replace the missing or deteriorated bone with healthy tissue so that the jawbone can continue to function properly and the facial appearance can be maintained or restored. This is often done when there is not enough bone tissue available to support a dental implant. After undergoing bone grafting, the majority of patients are able to receive dental implants and enjoy a restoration that encourages further bone growth.
